in order for area 0 to detect rip (external routes) redistribution is the correct option.
virtual link is used to connect non-backbone area to backbone area 0 through a transit area. but will not let area 0 to detect external routes.

Alrasheed is correct, even if we created a Virtual link, The network won't be advertised without redistributing the RIP routes.
